A courtesy meeting took place this morning between the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Archbishop Paul Cremona OP to discuss the revision of the 1992 Church-State agreement. Also present for the meeting was the Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General, Mons. Charles J. Scicluna.
Following the meeting the Prime Minister said that as as part of the court reform the Maltese courts will no longer be subordinate to the Ecclesiastical Tribunal’s decisions. He also said that during the meeting they had discussed the civil liberties, in particular civil unions.
Dr Muscat said, “I will be writing to the Holy See to indicate the intentions of the Maltese government to discussions.”
Mgr Cremona said that the revised agreement was agreeable to all parties.
The Prime Minister also assured the Church leaders of Government’s continuing support, particularly the financing of church schools.
