The Orlando Singers from the UK, under the direction of David Everett, are giving a recital of sacred motets at St George’s Basilica, Victoria, Gozo, next Monday the 27th of May.
Established nearly 20 years ago, The Orlando Singers has a well-deserved reputation for the excellence of its singing which stretches from Westminster Abbey to the Kasbah Museum in Tangier.
In addition to giving classical concerts across the south west of England in cathedrals, churches and concert halls, the choir has broadcast twice on BBC Radio 2 and appeared in two pop concerts as backing singers!
The choir covers the whole temporal range of western classical music, from the 12th century mystic Hildegard of Bingen to world premieres. It specialises in a capella singing although we regularly perform with orchestra and organ.
The choir, which numbers around 20 voices, comprises singers from as far apart as London and Bristol. Each singer is auditioned by the Founder and Director of the choir, David Everett.
David was educated at Chetham’s School of Music whilst a chorister in Manchester Cathedral. He has been involved with the world of music ever since, singing with a number of cathedral choirs, composing a wide range of music and working for the Arts Council.
He currently directs 4 choirs in addition to The Orlando Singers, is the Festival Director of Milton Abbey Music Festival and runs Wessex Chamber Orchestra, which comprises members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and other professional musicians.
St George’s Chapel – Windsor Castle, York Minster, Canterbury Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral, the aforementioned Westminster Abbey and Lincoln Cathedral are just some of the churches that have invited the choir to replace its own choir whilst they are on vacation. Trips abroad have taken the choir to Paris, Normandy, Gent, Bruges, Athens, Tangier, Prague, Vilnius, Brussels, The Hague, Arnhem and now to Gozo.
The recital will take approximately 50 minutes and starts at 7.30pm. Everyone is warmly invited to attend.
