2013 marks the first centenary of the XXIVth International Eucharistic Congress that was held in Malta in 1913. To mark this centenary celebration, the Gozo Choir Chorus Urbanus will present a Concert of Eucharistic Hymns, two days after the national celebration by the Archdiocese of Malta.
The concert, which is the fifth in the Urbanus Concert Series will feature works by Bruckner, Dobici, Mozart, Dubois, Galea, Concone, Frisina and Caruana.
The main objective of the 1913 Congress was to promote an awareness of the very central place that the Eucharist occupies in the life and mission of the Catholic Church. Cardinals from Catania, Palermo, Pesaro, Sivilia, and Westminster, and Bishops from Algiers, Argentina, Beirut, Canada, Carthage, England, Eritrea, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Jerusalem (Patriarch), New Zealand, Pietra, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Sicily, Spain and Syria were among the delegates who participated.
The major activities of the event in Malta took place in Floriana, Mosta and Valletta. It seems that the hymn T’adoriam Ostia Divina composed by Giuseppe Caruana to lyrics by Dun Karm Psaila for this Eucharistic Congress also gained popularity in countries to which delegates at the Malta Congress had taken a copy back home with them.
The concert will be held at St Augustine Church in Victoria, this coming Sunday, the 9th of June, starting at 8.00pm. Entrance is freee of charge and patrons are asked to be seated 10 minutes before the concert commences.
