A lecture by Sandro Debono, co-curator of the exhibition and Senior Curator at the National Museum of Fine Arts, has been organsed by the Malta Historical Society as part of its Lecture Series 2013-2014.
This lecture will take audiences beyond Heritage Malta’s highly-acclaimed international exhibition of the year.
Sandro Debono is Heritage Malta ‘s Senior Curator for the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Presidential Palaces. He has curated, solo or jointly, numerous exhibitions including ‘Antonio Sciortino – Un Escultor Maltes del Siglo XX’, Casa Museo Benlliure, Valencia (Spain), 2007, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) – In Quest of Beauty, Grand Salon, Auberge de Provence, Valletta (Malta) 2011 besides the latest highly-acclaimed international exhibition ‘Mattia Preti – Faith and Humanity’, President’s Palace, Valletta (May to July 2013), previously at Museo Civico di Taverna (February to April 2013).
He has lectured at the former Institute for Conservation studies ( Malta ), Galleria Inter-Disciplinare della Sicilia, Palazzo Abatellis ( Palermo ), Uppsala University ( Sweden ) and occasionally at the University of Malta .
Sandro has also published extensively on art-related subjects including the politics of art and heritage interpretation.
The lecture will review the research questions that the international exhibition – Mattia Preti – Faith and Humanity – set out to answer and the outcome of the exhibition project. It shall also present the latest findings on Mattia Preti and discuss research developments on the repertoire of this eventeenth century artist.
It will also illustrates how the research methodologies used in the past have influenced the way we understand and interpret Mattia Preti’s works and how new methodologies can help us rethink the artist’s significance and merits.
The lecture takes place next Tuesdaythe 22nd of October, starting at 6.30pm and is kindly hosted by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, Valletta.
