Dr Raymond C. Xerri, Director for the Maltese Living Abroad, recently presented a copy of the new Xewkija Local History drawing book to the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, Xewkija Mayor, Mr Paul Azzopardi and the Xewkija Primary Head of School, Mr Frank Tabone.
This excellent presentation targeting Year 3 and 4 children will be followed up by another two new versions highlighting Xewkija’s rich historical, cultural and religious heritage, aimed this time, to Year 1 and 2 as well as Year 5 and 6 children.
All the work and research were carried out voluntarily – Dr. Xerri prepared the text whereas Mr Falzon did the illustrations.
Mr Paul Azzopardi, Xewkija Mayor, then later followed up with the presentation of a signed copy of this book to each and every child at Year 3 and 4 level at Gozo College Xewkija Primary.
Xewkija Primary said that it would like to give a “final word of gratitude to Xewkija Local Council which is the only Council on the island of Gozo that fully financed the Local History series of three books for all the primary children residing at Xewkija.”
“Definite proof that education is on the top of its agenda,” Xewkija Primary concluded.

In my opinion, this is an excellent way to help children to appreciate the artistic and cultural heritage of their village. For while the children enjoy themselves colouring the book, they will begin to delve deeper in the history and artistic value of the places of interest and the works of art that they see everyday but go about unnoticed.
