New electronic ID cards will start to be issued from tomorrow, Wednesday, the 12th of February.
Godwin Grima, the man appointed by The Prime Minister to take charge of the project, explained that initially the new ID card will be issued only to applicants who have lost or had their card stolen, because they got married, a change of address or they’re applying for their first ID card
Following this soft roll-out, the 320,00 ID card holders will then have their old existing cards replaced.
The ID card replacement programme was due to begin back in 2007, however, further delays would have meant that Malta would risk losing €7.7 million from the EU, after it funded the project under the digital agenda initiative for the period between 2007 and 2013. Dr Grima said.
