BirdLife Malta’s youth group, Falko, is today holding the Islands’ first ever National Spring Bird Race- a competition between 8 teams of nature enthusiasts of all ages racing against the clock to see (or hear) as many different species of birds as possible.
As the spring migration of birds through the Maltese Islands nears its peak towards the end of April, it is the perfect time of year for anyone who enjoys birds- whether they are experts or novices- to get out into the countryside and watch them.
Teams are made up of young and old, families, friends and new acquaintances. Each team will have with them one experienced birdwatcher to help identify birds in the field by sight and sound, giving their less experienced team-mates a chance to see just how many birds there are to be found in Malta in spring.
The race started at 8.30am, with all the teams meeting at Simar. Each team can travel by car anywhere in the island in search of the species that could win them the race. The only rule is that at least 2 members of the team must see (or hear) a bird to count it on their list of birds they see.
The race finished at 3pm back at Is-Simar Nature Reserve. There will be penalties for late returners (and cheaters)!
Prizes will be awarded for the team that spots the most species, along with prizes for:
Most Sponsorship Raised, Best Bird Photo Taken and Best Nature Photo Taken-
