Michelina Enriquez, aged 60 has been fined €700 by the court for selling Sicilian honey in jars which were labelled as ‘Malta Honey’ and her two sons, Simon Kris Enriquez, aged 38 and Jamie Charles Enriquez, aged 32 were given a 6-month jail sentence suspended for a year. The family are from San Lawrenz, Gozo.
The Rural Affairs Ministry carried an inspection in 2011 at the home of one of her sons, Simon Kris Enriquez, following complaints that foreign honey was being sold as a local product.
Empty honey jars labelled ‘Miele di Eucalipto’ were discovered and it was later established that the contents were being emptied into other jars labelled as ‘Malta Honey.’
It was found from tests that were subsequently carried that the honey actually originated from Sicily.
