Thanks to an initiative by the Department of Cardiology at Mater Dei Hospital, over the past three weeks, a new procedure related to the extraction of pacemakers was successfully performed on four patients.
The Health Ministry said that up to a couple of weeks ago, these patients had to be referred to hospitals overseas at a huge cost to the National Health Service and at a personal discomfort to the patients and their families. This new procedure, started taking place locally, thanks to an investment in new resources and the better use of the skills of the human resources within the Maltese Health Sector.
During a visit that the Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne made to the department of cardiology, he met a number of doctors and nurses working at the Cath Suite. He praised their commitment towards the patient and thanked them for their impeccable work.
Mr. Fearne stated that thanks to this new procedure, the patient can be treated locally and without having to go abroad. “Our aim is to keep on increasing the number of services offered locally so the patients can avail themselves of a better service that fulfills their expectations,” said Mr. Fearne.
