88km walked & 448 rubbish bags filled during Gozo Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes

The Gozo Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes, organised by Louis Debattista of the Gozo Greyhounds, are still going strong. He said that it is 16 weeks, since they first started the hikes, which take place every Sunday, if it’s not raining.

“448 bags have been collected so far, along with heavy items that don’t fit into the bags, 88km has been walked, including last Sunday’s hike around Ghasri, which was 7.9km.”

Louis said that they had a surprise volunteer turn up from Alternattiva Demokratika, Prof Arnold Cassola, who joined them for the second time on a the hike to help out and clean up the environment around Gozo.

“Gozo College Principal Victor Galea, also joined us with his family, as well as some new faces, which included locals and a friend of theirs from Holland. There was also another Dutch person, who knew so much about the local plant life and what we could eat, amazing!”

“People please stop trashing our country its your country too,” Louis said. Why don’t you plant trees instead and clean up your surroundings and stop saying its not mine or avoid it, together we can have a better, greener, Gozo.”

A volunteer on Sunday’s hike around Ghasri commented, “Gozo Rocks Clean & Green Hike! Had a fabulous time meeting some lovely new folks today! Can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon…hiking through beautiful countrysides, chatting with wonderfully interesting people AND cleaning the environment!

“Cheers to Gozo-Greyhounds Louis as always, for making these hikes happen! You continue to be an inspiration to us all!”

There will be no clean-up hike this coming Sunday, as Louis is organising the charity hike [1] for the Alive Foundation from Mgarr to Ramla.
