MUT announces Triennial General Conference and 95th Anniversary

The Malta Union of Teachers today announced its Triennial General Conference with the theme “Challenges Faced by European Educators’ Unions”, which will be held on Friday, the 30th of May.

This conference, to be addressed by the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and by the ETUCE European Director Mr. Martin Rømer together with MUT Officials, will conclude the current three year term of office of the current Union Council.

Present for the conference will also be educators’ Union foreign delegations from KTOEOS (Cyprus), ATIAHI (Azerbaijan) and POKDREPA (Bulgaria), who will provide the conference an international dimension.

During the Press Conference Union President Mr. Kevin Bonello provided a summary of the past three years and stated that they “were characterised by many issues including general elections, change in Government and many changes in the administration of educational authorities.”

He added, “notwithstanding this, the Union exercised professional trade-unionism and managed to conclude a variety of agreements and initiatives. These were also years in which the education sector faced huge reforms including co-education, middle and senior school reforms, which continued in spite of being promised otherwise.”

“These were particularly difficult moments because of the diversity of opinions within the Union and instead of one general line, the way forward has been to have almost personalised discussions about the future of each state-school.”

This year also marks the 95th Anniversary of the Union, and for this occasion the MUT is launching a logo which will be used throughout the year in conjunction with the MUT logo.

The Union will also be announcing further activities later on this year to mark this anniversary.
