Gozo objectives: Zero waste, natural parks & traffic free town centres – AD

Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, today presented the two AD candidates for Gozo, David Camilleri candidate for Qala, and Toni Falzon, candidate for Nadur.

Prof. Cassola said, “Our elected councillors in Qala and Nadur will work towards transparency and accountability in the governance of Gozitan affairs. In order to reach the objective of Gozo as a tourist destination with its specificity, we fully support the national waste strategy plan for 2050, which aims at reaching a zero waste society.”

“We will work within this framework for a local waste management plan adapted to each locality that identifies the best way to implement the National Strategy in Qala and Nadur, including a pilot project for the recycling of organic and food waste,” concluded Prof. Cassola.

David Camilleri, AD candidate for Qala, said, “we are ready to work in Qala and Nadur to collaborate with MEPA for the development of children’s sea water parks in the abandoned Hondoq ir-Rummien quarry in Qala and in Ramla l-Hamra in Nadur, where children can safely play in sea water fountains under the shade of trees.”

“We propose to work together in our councils with the national authorities to create Nature Parks in the publicly owned land of ‘iz-Zirka’ in Qala and ‘il-Qortin Isopu’ in Nadur . These parks would be a managed and protected environment of indigenous and endemic trees and plants to safeguard their future survival on Gozo.”

“From within our local councils we will work to convince MEPA to develop sea Nature Parks from ‘Xtajta ta’ Hondoq ir-Rummien’ till ‘il-Gebel tac-Cawl’ in Qala and from ‘Xtajta ta’ Dahlet Qorrot’ till ‘rdum San Filippu’, in Nadur, where people can swim and snorkel in a safe and secure environment.”

Camilleri added, “at the same time, we will encourage our Local Councils to cooperate with Transport Malta to reduce traffic flows in the village core, thereby diminishing air and noise pollution.”

“Finally, we will encourage our councils to monitor any illegalities happening within the confines of our Local Council using unobtrusive methods whilst we ensure that adequate local waste and recycling facilities are available and properly maintained, especially during the peak holiday period,” concluded David Camilleri.
