Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing, Justyne Caruana today officially launched a project of intergenerational activity between the elderly and children to participate in Talent+ organised by Gozo Football Club, Kercem Ajax FC.
Dr Justyne Caruana stressed the importance of solidarity and intergenerational contact to further increase the participation of older people in society in the spirit of the active ageing strategy adopted by the Government.
She explained that this project will be helping children to become more familiar with the concept of active ageing which is being promoted by the Government. It also means they will have a more active role in the community, and the elderly will have support and company. In this way we are continuing to combat the loneliness of the elderly, as well as the social exclusion, Dr Caruana said.
Dr Caruana praised this initiative and said how later there will be other projects aimed towards assisting the elderly.
The Parliamentary Secretary reminded everyone that the Department for the Elderly and Community Care is organising an open event [1] at the Centre for Active Ageing in Xewkija on Sunday evening, during which will be exhibited works made by the elderly who attend other Centres as part the training programme launched last October.
On his part the President of Kercem Ajax FC, Albert Camilleri said that this project will be of great benefit both for children and for the elderly who will participate in it, because it will promote the value of solidarity between generations.
He thanked the Parliamentary Secretary for believing in the project and in the assistance provided to bring it to fruition, saying that he looked forward to other such joint initiatives in the future.
