San Lawrenz base stations tested for levels of EMF at Council’s request

Earlier this month, at the request of the San Lawrenz Local Council, the technical team of the Malta Communications Authority, made a set of tests to confirm that the levels of Electronic Magnetic Field (EMF) emitted by base stations in San Lawrenz, comply with the laws administered by the Authority.

The Council said that it is happy to announce that the results are published. The MCA said that measurements were compared to the maximum permissible radiation levels established at law, as recommended by the competent health authorities; these refer to the general public exposure levels contained in the guidelines of the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).

“MCA’s measurements have concluded that the radiation levels present at the time of measurements were low. These results were extrapolated to an estimate of the level of emissions from the transmitters under the maximum traffic conditions. This process was carried out to assume worst case scenarios. In this case the radiation levels were also below the established limits,” the Council said.

These results, which were received by email, were forwarded to the department responsible for environmental health for their information and any possible comments, the Council said.
