MIA chosen by BA to launch baggage self-tagging system for customers

MIA chosen by BA to launch baggage self-tagging system for customersMalta International Airport has been chosen by British Airways to launch a baggage self-tagging system for all its passengers for the first time in Europe.

British Airways passengers can now print their baggage tags using the self-check-in kiosks available in the Check-In Hall, allowing them to decrease their check-in time.

“Malta International Airport embraces innovation and we are delighted that British Airways chose Malta International Airport as its first European partner in this endeavour. With this new state-of-the-art technology, travellers will have more time to get ready for their flight while also reducing time spent in queues. We believe this will enhance fliers’ experience at the airport and we are looking into extending this service to other airlines in the future,” said Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg.

This new service will give British Airways travellers more control over their journey – once the tags are printed and safely attached to their bags, passengers only need to deposit their suitcase at the designated baggage drop in the same hall.

The CUSS (Common Use Self-Service) kiosks were installed in July 2014 to allow Lufthansa passengers to check-in without waiting in line – a service which was especially convenient for passengers carrying only cabin-luggage.

Since then the service was extended to other airlines including British Airways, who took the service one step further by offering their passengers the option to self-tag their hold baggage.

“Our customers appreciate the opportunity to do more for themselves – like self-service check-in, choosing seats and printing their own boarding cards. Now for the first time they will be able to print their own baggage tags at one of our European airports, Malta International Airport. We are providing them with the freedom to be in control and we are glad that we could work with Malta International Airport to provide this facility,” a spokesperson from British Airways said.

Be interesting when you hit customs in all the European country’s that have not agreed this system with BA

Your comment is pointless as the system for labelling your own cases has been used for some time. Assuming you have checked in on line then all you are doing is printing a label and sticking it on you case! This is done from a scan of your boarding pass and is accepted at other airports without any problem as it is exactly the same as if had been printed by staff at check in. We use it in Munich all the time.
