The MUT welcomes decision of the Gozo Court on clearing LSA

The MUT in a statement this afternoon, said that it would like to express their sincere satisfaction following the decision by the Gozo Court to release a Learning Support Assistant from any charge, "having been falsely accused of the abuse of a child with learning disabilities."

The Gozitan Learning Support Assistant was found not guilty and acquitted of all the charges brought against her, in the Court earlier today.

The Court found that the girl's testimony was highly inconsistent, saying that the prosecution had failed to prove its charges beyond reasonable doubt.

The Court also banned the publication of the name of the child concerned along with the family, in any type of communication or medium.

The Malta Union of Teachers gave thanks to the Magistrate at the Gozo Court, as well as Minister Bartolo and the Education Ministry for the support given to this educator, the Public Service Commission, the Ministry for Gozo and the defence counsel .

The Union also thanked the Ministry of Interior and Justice, as well as the Police, who had after this case entered into discussions with the Union to improve the processes for any similar circumstances.

Last but not least, the Union said that it expressed its solidarity with the educator and their family, who, the Union said, have all been through so much during the last 4 years.

The MUT concluded by saying that it hoped that this case is an opportunity of learning for everyone.
