The Gharb Local Council has said that it will drop any legal action against Kate Holmes, following her retraction of comments about Frenc tal-Gharb made in an open letter.
The Council welcomed the news of the retraction, saying that it can only be described as a "positive step in the right direction."
The Council said that it felt duty bound to address the allegations made by Mrs Holmes, who had said that Frenc tal-Gharb used cannabis. "Frenc tal-Gharb holds a special place in the heart of all those forming part of the Gharb community, and in the heart of many Maltese and Gozitans alike."
"This became evident during this week in particular given the number of calls made and the number of messages received by the Gharb Local Council supporting its decision to intervene," it said.
The Council concluded by saying that "it is most definitely unwilling to escalate matters especially now that this retraction has been made."
