People are unaware of European decisions affecting Malta – Sant

MEP Alfred Sant, has said that most people are not aware on European decisions affecting Malta.

Dr. Sant, speaking during the official launch of a digital newsletter MALTA U L-UNJONI EWROPEA, said the EU is facing a number of crisis situations but new decisions are still being taken which will affect Malta.

"The problem is that most people are not aware of what is going on and only get to know about things when they have already been decided and are about to be implemented in Malta."

He added, "we should expect changes and developments in the areas of taxation, immigration, management of the Eurozone, financial services, environment, among others. I firmly believe that one of the main tasks of MEPs is to promote a greater public awareness of significant issues arising not only at the level of the European Parliament, but also at that of the EU as a whole."

Dr. Sant said the newsletter is meant to bring to the attention of the Maltese public arising European issues before they are decided.

"It is a difficult task, because most people naturally focus on local political and economic events and give scant attention to the European perspective. Over the past year we have been testing how to make the newsletter more user friendly and effective."

"This launch is intended to mark the new communications model set for it. The newsletter will continue to be improved according to the experience and feedback we obtain in order to ensure that public opinion stays alert to current and emerging European issues that will be significant to the Maltese people." remarked Dr. Sant.
