The Planning Board has approved planning permission for the construction of a medical school within the grounds of the Gozo General Hospital in Victoria. This educational infrastructural project forms part of a comprehensive redevelopment of the Gozo Hospital site.
The contemporary design medical school, which will be built over four floors with a footprint area of 2400 square metres, will include lecture halls, operating theatres for training purposes, seminar rooms, a computer lab, a library, a canteen, staff offices, meeting rooms and shower/changing facilities.
Secondary ancillary facilities to support the operation of the school will also be incorporated within the project. These will include reservoirs, pump rooms, a substation, a generator room and waste and equipment storage areas.
The Planning Authority said that to make way for this project some existing structures developed in the 1970s which include an ambulance shelter, helipad, store, offices and canteen as well as a roofed reservoir will be demolished.
The medical school is intended to cater for 330 students and 30 teaching and administrative staff.
