OASI National Conference: Illum Jien, Ghada Int … Id-Droga wara Biebna!

A National Conference – Illum Jien, Ghada Int … Id-Droga wara Biebna! – took place today organised by the OASI Foundation of Gozo, in collaboration with the Local Councils of Floriana, Mosta and Naxxar.

It was held under the Distinct Patronage of President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, at the Mosta Local Council and was moderated by Dr. Corazon Mizzi.

In her opening speech President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, mentioned that it is important that the issue of drugs should always be placed at the forefront of the national agenda.

She emphasised that more research should be done on this issue and persons who are experiencing any kind of dependency should be consulted.

Two panels took part in the discussion, made up of Dr Robert Chircop – Emergency Physician & Clinical Toxicologist, Ms. Pauline Miceli – Commissioner for Children and Mr. Dennis Theuma – Assistant Commissioner of the Malta Police Force, Dr. Anna Maria Vella – President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro – Founder of the Millennium Chapel, Mr. Godwin Sammut – Forensic Scientist and Ms. Daniela Bugeja – Anti-Substance Abuse Service.

OASI said that the salient points raised included that drugs are always changing, with more powerful synthetic drugs being introduced, and the age of use always getting lower.

Also, the importance of having positive role models and stability in childhood was emphasised. This should also be strengthened through education. The issues and problems of driving under the influence and doping in sport were also addressed.

The audience, which included representatives from multiple sectors, including Government agencies, NGOs, educators and persons who work with youths, actively participated in the conference. The discussion turned to the legalisation of Cannabis and Mental Health.

The Mayors of the Local Councils also addressed those present, and afterwards Mr. Clifford Galea launched the cookbook OASI ta’ Toghmiet in aid of the OASI Foundation.

Fr. Emmanuel Cordina, Director General of OASI, closed the conference, emphasising the importance of discussions such as this before the introduction of new laws.
