Around 5000 tonnes of tomatoes [1] are currently being processed this season at the Magro Brothers plant in Xewkija, Gozo, the Department of Information has said in a statement.
Truckloads of tomatoes are arriving every day at the factory and the company said that over 150 employees are involved in some way or another through the season.The tomatoes arrive at the plant soon after they cut and are processed and packaged within 24 hours.
During a visit to the plant, Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri said that over the past months, the Government had ensured that some €6 million through European funding will be allocated in direct aid for farmers producing tomatoes, spanning from 2021 to 2027.
“The Government’s vision is to continue to promote the Maltese agricultural product as the first option for consumption,” he said.
