Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri has announced that discussions are starting for the first horse swimming pool in Gozo, which will be located in the village of Sannat. He also added that the Sannat Local Council is at an advanced stage to begin works for a dog park in the village.
Today, Saturday, the 12th of October, there will be a special evening event in Sannat, organised by the Local Council, in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights.
Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri said that such activities are important because they serve as a platform to promote local products, as well as educate people about animal protection.
He explained that although the government works by financially supporting organisations and animal sanctuaries, educating the public on how to take care of animals and treat them accordingly also remains important.
Speaking about this evening’s event, the Parliamentary Secretary said that this activity is synonymous with the village of Sannat and its traditions.
He said that in the old days Sannat residents used to meet in the same square to talk about animals and even exchange some of them. Today this is no longer seen, but the Local Council organises activities for domestic animals to foster a culture towards all animals.
Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri will open the evening event and encouraged everyone to attend this activity from 7: 45pm onwards in Pjazza Isqof Cocco Palmieri, Sannat.
Besides animal blessings, this year the Parliamentary Secretariat, together with the council and Mayor Philip Vella, worked together to make the evening more traditional and therefore it will also include traditional music – daqqaqa, ghana and makjetti.

A dog park is very interesting and very much needed. Yet many villages and towns will not travel to the few dog parks and these will be for only the resident few. Many people invested in buying lots so that one day when their children grow up they would easily build on this lot given to them by their parents. In the meantime, for many years these lots, scattered around the islands stay there gathering garbage, insects, and rodents. If the Councils help secure these lots with permission from the owners, set up a couple of benches and clean the lots up, one can easily allocate them as dog parks until the time comes when they are to be built up into houses.

The mess that will soon accumulate in a ‘dog park’ doesn’t bear thinking about. Irresponsible owners will assume that someone else will clear up after them once their dog has done it’s business I can imagine that any self-respecting dog-owner would steer well clear of such a place.
