Trapping season opens for Song Thrush today, Golden Plover in November

Trapping season opens for Song Thrush today, Golden Plover in NovemberFollowing the recommendations by the Ornis Committee [1], the Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights has announced in a statement, today’s opening of the autumn trapping season in Gozo and Malta for Song Thrush and Golden Plover.

The trapping season for Song Thrush is from today, Sunday, the 20th of October until the 31st of December, both dates inclusive, while trapping for Golden Plover opens on the 1st of November until the 10th of January 2020, both dates inclusive, provided the national quotas have not been met, said the Secretariat.

The trapping season for these two species will open by way of a derogation, the Secretariat said, and is “only authorised for those trappers who received a Special License for trapping sites registered for this season.”

It added that trapping is from two hours before sunrise until two hours after sunset. The national quota is 5,000 Song Thrush and 700 Golden Plover. There will be no individual quotas.

The Secretariat stated that, “each trapper is legally obliged to report any birds trapped immediately, as outlined in the special license.”

“The season for the relevant species will be closed if the quota is reached.” The Secretariat warned that, “the quota as required by the Birds Directive must be respected in order to ensure that the derogation is implemented correctly.”

Why not just let birds fly free as they should do ..? (or am I in danger of catching some lead …..)
