Gorg Pisani exhibition marking his 1st Centenary

An exhibition of manuscripts, books, photos and memorials of the Gozitan poet Gorg Pisani is currently being held at the Exhibition Hall within the Ministry for Gozo.

This exhibition is marking the 1st centenary from the birth of the renowned Gozitan poet. Gorg Pisani was born in Victoria Gozo on the 6th May 1909.

During the inauguration of this exhibition, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono paid tribute to Gorg Pisani for his valid contribution as a poet, teacher and patriot. She remarked that no other Gozitan of recent generations is as synonymous with Gozo and all that which is Gozitan, as much as Gorg Pisani.

The Minister added that notwithstanding the commemorative monument that was erected in his memory eight years ago, Pisani’s poems and writings are a living legacy which continues to teach and please all those who read them.

Minister Debono mentioned Gorg Pisani’s role as an official at the Department of Information and his role during war. He played a determining part in the wheat gathering campaign during World War II, that helped Malta to keep its ground against the enemy. For several years, Pisani taught Maltese at the Gozo Lyceum.

Amongst the items on show, one may find correspondence with prominent personalities within the Maltese language and literature fields as well as others coming from the ecclesiastical and civil authorities. Their contents give proof of the respect he gained through his works.

In 1992, Gorg Pisani was honoured with the Medal for Service to the Republic in recognition of his work and contribution in favour of Malta and Gozo.

The exhibition will be open from Monday to Friday, between 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. and on Saturday between 9.00 a.m. and noon.
