The 30th anniversary of the Pastoral visit of Pope Saint John Paul II to Gozo, was marked by the laying of a floral wreath by Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri on the national monument in Victoria – the work of Gozitan sculptor Chev. Alfred Camilleri Cauchi.
The ceremony, which was organised by the JP2 Foundation [1], also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Karol Józef Wojtyla on the 18th of May.
The Minister promised all possible assistance to the Foundation, which expressed its wish to rehabilitate the area where the bronze monument stands.
The Foundation said that the Prime Minister had also expressed his wish to be present but regretted that he could not attend due to other commitments in Malta and promised that in the future he would come to pay his respects at the National Shrine of this Pope.
The Foundation had been working on a programme of activities to commemorate these anniversaries, however they had to be postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
The Foundation said that when possible, it will hold a number of cultural and religious activities to pay tribute to this long-serving Pope.
