Government jeopardising education for sake of the economy – ADZ

Government jeopardising education for sake of the economy - ADZADZ Green Youth Malta, has accused the government of “jeopardising our education for the sake of the economy.”

In a statement, ADZ said that the Prime Minister has stated that he is aiming to open schools this coming September, “this is despite the fact that Malta currently has 677 active cases of Covid-19.”

It said that this has left many students and parents “worried about their health and safety.” Malta has seen a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in summer school, which is preliminary evidence of what might occur once we open schools in September.”

ADZ went on to say that on Monday, the Minister of Health announced new measures that included the shutting down of all clubs, bars and discos.

“However, the Malta Tourism Authority “openly defied” such measures, stating that “bars [and clubs] are allowed to open as long as they serve food with drinks. As a guideline packed food like crisps etc is considered as food.”

By defying Public Health advice in this manner, the Malta Tourism Authority is putting the students at risk, the ADZ said.

The ADZ added the “government needs to take the Covid-19 situation more seriously if they wish for the students to return to school safely.”

ADZ called on the Malta Tourism Authority to “retract their statement so that all places of entertainment where there’s a mass concentration of individuals are shut down regardless of the food that they serve.”

“It would be unfair for students to sacrifice their education due to the blatant mishandling of this public health crisis,” ADZ concluded.
