Following last year’s experimental launch of the Leone Goes Pop series, the Leone Band of Victoria Gozo is putting up the second edition of this open air concert, under the title Leone Goes Pop & Movies.
As the name indicates, Gozo’s first civic band, due to celebrate its 150 years of existence within four years, shall present an array of pop music in the first part of the concert to be held in Independence Square (it-Tokk), Victoria, followed by a second part dedicated to film music.
Under the direction of resident conductor Colin Attard, the Leone Band will interpret some of the most celebrated and award-winning film music scores including the 007 theme, music by Henry Mancini, movie blockbuster soundtracks and the all-time classic, Charles Chaplin movie themes, composed by the same great artist.
Yet, the most awaited number this year will surely be The Best of The Tramps – a medley arranged by Joseph Debrincat (jr), comprising of the immortal Xemx, Sinjur Gib il-Paci, and Inti Djamant from Gozo’s legendary band The Tramps. This will be a tribute to the late Dominic Grech, lead singer of the band, who is also a former bandsman of the Leone, and to the glorious days of The Tramps at the Aurora dances, way back in the 70’s and 80’s.
Enhanced with a vigorous light show and visual projections, together with the participation of guest singers Pamela and Mario Caruana, the Leone promises another high-quality musical concert for tourists and locals alike, after last year’s first edition attracted well over 500 people in Victoria’s main square.
Leone Goes Pop & Movies will be held in Independence Square on Sunday, May the 10th, 2009 at 8.30pm.
Seats will be available and entrance is free. The concert is being sponsored by Cisk and Citadel Insurance, with the generous aid of the Victoria Local Council and the Culture Section within the Ministry for Gozo.
