Students “do not deserve to be kept in the dark” over strikes – SDM

Studenti Demokristjani Maltin (SDM) said on Thursday that students “do not deserve to be kept in the dark” regarding the two-day strike as issued by the MUT, “especially when a situation like this has a direct effect on their education.”

It said in a statement that as a student organisation, it is “very disappointed” towards the fact that “students are not being kept in the loop on what is going on.”

SDM said “we understand that educators have the legal and democratic right to strike,” however a number of issues have been passed on to them directly by students from all major educational institutions.

It stressed that clarification is needed as to whether or not lessons are going to be held in the coming days – be them online or on-campus.

“We strongly believe that the amount of ‘educational’ and ‘schooling’ time students have lost in the past year should be considered when such decisions are to be taken.” SDM argued that, “students are not to blame and so they should not suffer any of the consequences.”

“As SDM, our main priority is to always keep the rights of all students protected and overseen,” it said.

SDM called on the relevant authorities to resolve this situation as soon as possible to minimise the negative effect this will have on students.

“These are tough times for everyone but the right of having an education should never be compromised,” said SDM.

“We encourage students who have any questions and/or concerns to contact us on our Facebook page or by sending an email on info.sdmmalta@gmail.com [1]. All messages and emails will be kept in confidence,” it said.
