Used and ‘pre-loved’ items to be available from new Reuse Centres

Used and ‘pre-loved’ items are to get a new lease of life at Reuse Centres which are being set up on Gozo and Malta.

WasteServ will be opening four Reuse Centres – including Tal-Kus in Gozo – to enhance its Civic Amenity Site experience and to further widen the concept of a circular economy.

These centres, which are expected to be opened by the end of the year, will offer used and ‘pre-loved’ items such as ceramics, toys, books, and loose furniture which still hold value and can be reused.

This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia explained that people will be able to obtain these items against a pre-established donation which will go towards a fund for environmental initiatives, including a bee conservation programme.

A new tender (https://www.wsm.com.mt/en/tenders [1]) has been issued which will see shipping containers repurposed and transformed into a high-end innovative retail space with a creative design to serve as Reuse Centres. These will be placed at the Civic Amenity Sites in Gozo as above, and in Malta for Luqa, Hal Far and Mriehel.

Minister Farrugia said that these centres will provide an excellent opportunity to extend the life of various items that still hold value and would have otherwise entered the waste stream.

He added that this also complements the objectives of the new Long-Term Waste Management Plan by fostering a culture of resource efficiency and sustainable consumption.

At long last common sense has ruled and proper re-cycling of unwanted items is going to start. Will be interesting to see how the system is going to operate. On- line listing would be a good start so one can ‘cherry pick ‘ items.
