A contactless payments system has started on all 400 buses operated by Malta Public Transport. Bus passengers can now use their contactless bank cards, smartphones or smartwatches to pay for their bus tickets.
“Through this contactless payments system we will continue to raise the quality of service for both those who already travel regularly by bus as well as for those who use it less often,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg.
He added that, “in addition, this initiative is another measure to reduce the spread of cash money from one person to another.”

It is unfortunate that some Maltese bank’s have not kept up with the times and do not offer contact less cards, BNF for one!
Will be useful for tourists but not sure whether they would be faced with foreign exchange charges if accounts not in Euros, which could be excessive for a €1.50 charge!
Most local regular bus users use the Tallinja card anyway!
