Over the coming weekend BirdLife Malta will join 38 other BirdLife Partners across Europe and Central Asia for the annual EuroBirdwatch event to celebrate the autumn migration of birds.
This is the biggest event of the BirdLife Partnership in Europe and here in Malta we will be organising a number of events on Saturday, the of 2nd [1] and Sunday, the 3rd of October [2] which will include bird ringing sessions open to the general public (with booking), an Open Day at our Ghadira Nature Reserve and a family picnic with guided birdwatching at Buskett. Please see the links for booking and information.
During these two days birdwatchers across the continent will be counting the number of migratory birds observed in their respective countries and reporting back to the EuroBirdwatch centre.
BirdLife Malta will also be contributing by reporting Malta’s numbers.
The overall aim of the EuroBirdwatch is to raise awareness for the needs of the migratory birds on the breeding areas, the flyways and stopovers, and in the wintering places in the Mediterranean and in Africa. Birds face too many threats during migration. The most serious are climate change, intensification of the land use and illegal killing.
This year BirdLife Partners are highlighting the importance and need of nature restoration for securing suitable conditions for birds during breeding and migration. Many successful practices around Europe performed by BirdLife Partners show the importance and significance of habitat restoration and management for birds.
