The Light of an Island: Exhibition by Gozitan artist Catherine Emma Gauci

The Light of an Island – is the title of a new exhibition by a Gozitan artist opening at Rudy Buhler Art – The Colour Project, Marsaskala,

This new, solo exhibition by Gozitan painter Catherine Emma Gauci opens on Saturday, the 2 of April, until Sunday, the 8th of May.

Catherine Emma Gauci is of English origin but has lived and worked as a full-time artist in Gozo for many years. Her paintings reflect the title of the exhibition – The Light of an Island – and are a celebration of the informal art and of her artistic expression of feelings, moods, and emotions towards her beloved Gozo.

Catherine is a life- long painter, with a B.A. (hons) degree in Art with Art history and Psychology.

She moved to the Maltese Islands in 2006 and made Gozo her home. She has always been a painter, yet the experience of being immersed in such a landscape and the sheer beauty of the Maltese Islands with its ocean and rock and such a magical light, allowed her to open up more fully and paint in a more intuitive way, using an intensely rich colour palette.

The gallery said that “these paintings are what she has come to think of as ‘soulscapes.’ As a result of this newfound freedom in her painting life she began in 2017 to work full time as an artist and held her first successful solo exhibition at the Citadel on Gozo in 2019. This exhibition at The Colour Project is her first on mainland Malta.”

The artist explained, “the paintings are all contemporary abstracts in oil paint, which I love due to its lustre and beautiful translucency. Each piece is a journey, an adventure. I work intuitively and listen to what I feel needs to be said in each individual piece, as though telling a story.”

The exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am – 1pm, and 5pm – 8pm. There will be an Artist’s “Meet & Greet” on the 16th of April, at 11am.
