A team from BirdLife Malta is heading to Israel this week to participate in this year’s Champions of the Flyway event [1].
BirdLife Malta explained that this bird race, which takes place during the peak of migration in one of the most important migration routes, is organised by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and is a fundraising event that generates funds for the conservation of various birds.
The team consists of CEO Mark Sultana, Head of the BirdLife Malta Ringing Scheme and Council member Nicholas Galea, long-time serving Council member and bird ringer Ray Galea, and birding enthusiast Daniel Bonnici.
Champions of the Flyway have designated the year April 2021-April 2022 as the – Year Of The Dove – and funds will go to various entities, including BirdLife Malta, to help us in their work to save the vulnerable Turtle-dove.
BirdLife said that the Malta team, which is being kindly sponsored by ZEISS Birding, will be leaving for Eilat in the coming hours and will be providing updates on this experience.
BirdLife Malta wished the team all the very best and thanked everyone involved in this event and all those that have contributed with their donations.
