Sette Giugno riots to be commemorated in Xaghra tomorrow

Gozo will tomorrow be commemorating the 103rd anniversary of the events of Sette Giugno with a ceremony in Xaghra. The riots took place on the 7th of June 1919.

There will be a Mass, followed by a reenactment with the Xaghra Historical Reenactment Organisation. The commemorative event gets underway at 9.30am on Xaghra Square.

Wreaths and flowers will be laid at the monument dedicated to the victims of the riots in Bullara Street, the location of the original dwelling of Guzeppi Bajada, one of the victims who lost his life on that day.

On the 7th of June 1919, riots, precipitated by the economic state of Malta post-World War I, resulted in the death of four civilian protesters, including one from Xaghra, Gozo, following shootings by British servicemen.

On that fateful day the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island.
