Ramla turtle nest yields no hatchlings after being swamped in August

Sadly this year´s Ramla l-Hamra turtle nest yielded no hatchlings, despite an attempt to save them from adverse weather conditions by transferring them to an incubator in August. [1]

In a statement on Thursday, the Environment and Resources Authority said that veterinarians had confirmed that the embryos stopped developing when strong waves and currents submerged the nest, before they were transferred.

Nonetheless, the ERA and Nature Trust – FEE Malta reiterated the importance of alerting the Authority or Nature Trust Malta – FEE as soon as there is evidence of turtle nesting on any of the beaches on the islands.

The ERA thanked the volunteers, veterinarians and the NTM and ERA officials who assist in turtle nest monitoring and other related activities, as well as the entities concerned, including the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise and the Ministry for Gozo.
