HSBC Malta Foundation supported the promotion of renowned Maltese lacework for the ninth year running as part of its effort to carry on the legacy of this intricate art.
The Foundation financed this year's annual Malta Lace Competition with €3,000. The event was held last month at the Malta Parliament building, with the most impressive works recognised through prizes and certificates.
Five students from Zebbug, Gozo, participated in the competition, they had attended a lace making course organised by the Local Council, during the summer months.
The students attended the event with their teacher Ms Marian Buttigieg. Christine Galea, Abigail Borg, Josianne Cauchi, Elizabeth Farrugia and Martha Farrugia, were all given awards and encouraged to continue and learn this traditional craft.
The award ceremony was led by HSBC Malta Foundation Deputy Chairperson Mrs Jennifer Beane and Speaker of the House of Representatives Anglu Farrugia, in the company of Marquis Nicholas De Piro and Marchioness Frances de Piro from Casa Rocca Piccola Trust and Margaret Farrugia, the organiser.
