The Parliamentary Standing Committee for Gozo Affairs held its first meeting on Monday afternoon, after officially being set up through a motion that received unanimous consent last month [1].
Chairman of the Committee is Justyne Caruana, while members are the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, Chris Said and Kevin Cutajar from the Opposition.
Dr Justyne Caruana stressed that this is a forum dedicated to Gozo Affairs and is where all Gozitan stakeholders have the opportunity to participate, including members of the public.
The theme chosen for the discussion was `The impact of Covid-19 on Gozo and the way forward.’
Experts and stakeholders were invited to Monday’s meeting, including Professor Charmaine Gauci and representatives of the Gozo Business Chamber, the Gozo Tourism Association, Steward Healthcare and the Malta Tourism Authority, who all addressed the Committee members with a presentation on the topic.
Chairman Justyne Caruana pointed out that this is a vast topic that deserves wide discussion and will further require a series of meetings to provide an opportunity for the participation of more stakeholders and civil society representation.
On behalf of the Committee Dr Caruana also invited the general public to submit suggestions and proposals in order to have a voice and participate actively in the course and discussion within the Committee.
Dr Caruana stressed that this Committee is “not only discussing issues, but is taking action too.”
Chairman Dr Caruana sent a clear message that the Committee “wants to be closer to the Gozitans,” advising that she will make a request to the Speaker of the House to allow the hearings to be held in Gozo.
In this regard, the floor congratulated the Committee members for being the voice of Gozo and for the hard work that it will be undertaking in aid of Gozo and Gozitans.
This meeting was broadcast online on the Parliament website [2] and will also be broadcast on the Parliament television channel.
Anyone wishing to contact or put forward any suggestions to the Standing Committee for Gozo Affairs is asked to please send an email on gozo-affairs.committee@parlament.mt [3] or phone 25596352. The discussion is scheduled to continue next Thursday.

I would like to suggest to The Parliamentary Standing Committee for Gozo Affairs to ask Stewards to buy a new MRI Scanner for the Gozo General Hospital. This essential machine is well overdue. From the little I know a 1.5T is preferable although its magnetic strength is not as high as that of a 3T MRI SCANNER. While a 3T gives a sharper and a more contrast image it is negatively influenced with foreign implements and I am afraid that many of us have had foreign material to steady our bones or hips.
Pray for readers to second my request which will also help the Maltese living on Malta by pressing the < that shows upwards to show your concent for a new MRI in Gozo. Thank you
