Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg, in a statement on Sunday, said that the last 20 years in the batttle for Hondoq have been a very long journey, “consisting of many small steps towards achieving the goal of saving Hondoq from being ruined.”
Buttigieg welcomed the fact that “however today, we have a big step in the right direction, with the printed announcement of the PL election manifest proposal 319, which, when translated says: “Labour government has always been clear regarding the safe guarding of Hondoq ir-Rummien. We assure that this zone will not be developed in any way whilst we see that works will be done to make the bay a nicer place so it can offer a better environment for those who visit.”
Earlier this month the Qala Council [1] submitted its final submissions in the appeal on plans for a tourist complex and marina at Hondoq filed by developer – Gozo Prestige – had filed against the refusal.
Mayor Buttigieg has consistently been calling on the authorities for Hondoq to be declared as public domain and for local plans to be changed, pointing out that every referendum and social impact assessment held showed an overwhelming majority against the development.
