Gharb legend set to music in Outdoor Opera – Dawl Gdid

The Outdoor Opera ‘Dawl Gdid’ will be held live in a round contemporary theatre, organised by the Gharb Local Council with the participation of Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni.

Opera enthusiasts are being given another opportunity to enjoy their leisure interest and are invited to attend this special evening of live opera in a unique setting, away from a traditional theatre, in Our Lady’s Visitation Square, Gharb Main Square, Gozo.

Written by Mr. Sebastian Saliba, and with music by Maestro Raymond Sciberras – ‘Dawl Gdid’ is an original opera based on the legend of related to the old parish church known as ‘Knisja Taz-Zejt’.

This opera is being held under the project ‘Myths, Folklore & Legends Festival’ which started four years ago.

Through this project, the Council said it will be promoting culture and traditions in the locality of Gharb. The Council intents to hold an opera each year so that legends from the locality will be produced in an Opera and collected in the Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni archives.

The live orchestra will be under the direction of Mro. Jason Camilleri and the vocal director is Mro. Franco Cefai and Ms Antonella Mercieca. The artistic director is Mr. Jamie Camilleri.

Soloists: Tenor Charles Vincenti, Soprano Christine Dalli, Alto Graziellla Debattista and Baritone Albert Buttigieg.

This performance is on Sunday, the 11th of December, starting at 6.30pm. Admission is free.

The Gharb Local Council expressed its thanks to the Department of Local Government, the Gozo Cultural Heritage Directorate, and the Ministry for Gozo as the main sponsors.
