A Call for the Ecological, Archaeological, and Cultural Protection of Gozo by Dawn A. Saliba, Ph.D.

”This past month has been a shocking one for anyone who cares about Gozo’s nature, history, and beauty. In one fateful day, we received two pieces of news that caused our breath to stop.

First, a 22-apartment complex was approved for development within Ggantija Temple’s UNESCO World Heritage Site buffer zone, an outrage that activists have been fighting for years.

As if that wasn’t enough, that very same day our heritage received another death-stroke – the architecturally beautiful and iconic Fort Chambray’s British barracks (recently included in the “7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites in Europe” list) were approved for dismantling and demolition (PA/03884/23). Why? To make room for a luxurious five-star hotel.

All this on top of countless other attacks on our environment and heritage, most especially the Ta’ Lablab landscape near Santa Verna.

In an effort to fight against these abusive actions, MALTA-ARCH is holding the “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got ‘Til It’s Gone” performance-protest on Saturday, the 23rd of May at the Xaghra Viewpoint (10:30 – 12:30).

The event features political candidates, NGO representatives, performing artists, and local activists – all calling for change from the constant ecological, archaeological, and cultural destruction facing Gozo.”
