Over 30km of rubble walls have been restored or rebuilt around Gozo, through a €10 million EU funded project. The work was carried out by the EkoGozo Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo.

The project started about two years ago and works were carried out on walls along 40 different roads in Xaghra, Nadur, Xewkija, Ghajnsielem, Ghasri, San Lawrenz, Sannat, Qala, Santa Lucija, Kercem, Zebbug and Victoria.

In a joint statement, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri and EU Funds Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett explained how “this project is considered to be of national importance, particularly in light of the Government’s commitment to transform Gozo into an ecological island and for its contribution as support for Gozitan farmers and villagers.”

They also said that rubble walls are an important feature in the Gozitan rural landscape and apart from the visual impact they leave, they also have a great environmental importance because they prevent the erosion of soil when it rains.
