This year’s 44th anniversary of Freedom Day – Jum il-Helsien, was commemorated in Gozo with a musical programme in Independence Square performed by the St Gregory Band of Kercem, under the direction of Mro. Mark Gauci.

During the evening, the President of the Musical Society of St Gregory, Dr Joshua Grech, presented the publication ‘L-Ghaqda Muzikali San Girgor Ta’ Kercem – Storja tal-Ewwel 25 Sena 1997 -2022,’ to the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri.

The publication marks the silver jubilee of the musical society and covers the history of its first 25 years.

The Gozo Minister congratulated the Society’s Committee, Maestro, band members and singers Christabelle Formosa, Emma Micallef, Anna Azzopardi and Josephine Marie Grima, who took part in in the musical evening and making it such a memorable event.

Freedom Day is commemorated on the 31st of March, when on this date in 1979, the Defence Treaty with Britain came to an end as the last British forces left the island.

Activities commemorating this important historic date take place on, or around, this date every year.

The concert was organised by the National and Regional Festivals Committee and the Culture Office within the Ministry for Gozo and the Musical Society of St. Gregory Kercem.
