Police have said that a 77-year old man is in a critical condition after he hit his head when he fell on an escalator.

The accident happened at around 10.45am on Saturday morning in an establishment in Republic Street, Victoria, Gozo.

Police said that, the 72-year old wife of the man lost her balance while standing on the escalator and fell backwards on to her husband, who consequently also fell backwards and hit his head.

The man was assisted by a medical team at the scene before both were taken to the Gozo General Hospital, where he was later certified to have sustained serious injuries, while his wife was slightly injured. The husband and wife are from Victoria.

Duty Magistrate Simone Grech appointed an inquiry on the case.
