On Thursday morning, the President of the Gozo Region, Dr Samuel Azzopardi inaugurated “Gnien iz-Zebbug” in Zebbug, Gozo.
The event celebrated the completion of a 2-year transformation process, during which this abandoned field was revitalised using funds managed by the Gozo Region through the Regional Scheme – New Parks, Gardens, and Public Spaces – 2021.
The region provided €25,000 in funds, which were supplemented by additional contributions from the Zebbug Local Council.
The revitalised area which leads into Zebbug, Gozo’s most northern village, enjoys beautiful vistas of Gozo. Visitors can relax on recently placed benches under the shade of some 30 olive trees and take in the panoramic views across the surrounding hills of Gozo.
The name “Zebbug” originates from the abundance of olive trees on its plateau, a legacy that this project maintains. Not only does it preserve this heritage, but it also expands public spaces, inviting not just locals but everyone to enjoy this scenic spot.
The project also involved installing timber railings, picnic tables and passages. Moreover, the restoration of traditional rubble walls and planting of typical flora continue to keep Gozo’s identity alive.
Flora such as Sempreviva t’Ghawdex (Helichrysum melitense), Sigra tal-Irmied (Fraxinus nigra), Widnet il-Bahar (Cheirolophus crassifolius), Tenghud tas-sigra (Tree spurge) and Buzbiez (Fennel) were planted in order to add a further link with the identity of Gozo.
Dr Azzopardi stated, “this project not only breathes new life into a once derelict area but also aligns perfectly with the Gozo Region’s commitment to promoting green spaces within our communities.”
He added that “it showcases our dedication to enhancing the environment and creating accessible, beautiful open spaces for everyone to enjoy. A commendable effort towards a greener, healthier future for our region.”
The garden was inaugurated by Dr Samuel Azzopardi in the Presence of the Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, the Mayor of Zebbug Dr Marlene Cini, Vice-Mayor Ms Sandra Grech and councillors Mr Nicky Saliba, Mr Daniel Cordina and Mr Baskal Saliba.
The Mayor Dr Marlene Cini thanked the Gozo Region for funding the project and Zebbug Rovers FC for their continuous assistance in the restoration and upkeep of the garden. She commented that without the club, a project like this would not be possible.
