Central Government debt gets closer to the €10 billion mark

National Statistics Office data released today show that by by the end of October 2023, Central Government Debt was getting closer to the €10 billion mark, with the amount totalling €9,680.9 million – some €942.9 million higher than in 2022.
The increase reported under Malta Government Stocks (€1,401.2 million) was the main contributor to the rise in debt, the NSO said.
Higher debt was also reported under Euro coins issued in the name of the Treasury (€4.6 million).
The NSO noted that this increase in debt was partially offset by drops in Treasury Bills (€415.5 million) and the 62+ Malta Government Savings Bond (€23.5 million).
Higher holdings by government funds in Malta Government Stocks resulted in a decrease in debt of €23.9 million.
The NSO said that at the end of October, Government’s Consolidated Fund registered a deficit of €155.7 million.
Compared to the previous year, recurrent revenue and total expenditure increased by €694.9 million and €202.2 million, respectively.
A positive change was noted in the Government’s Consolidated Fund by €492.7 million.
