TM "clarifies" its position on Gozo fast ferry e-bikes meetingTransport Malta’s CEO, Mr. Jonathan Borg, said on Monday that he “aims to address and issue a clarification” the joint statement by NGOs regarding the carriage of e-bikes and e-scooters on Gozo fast ferries.

Borg said in a statement on Monday, that approximately three weeks ago, an individual approached the Authority to report that they had purchased a ticket for the Gozo Fast Ferry. He added that, “however, the ticket issuer failed to notice that the passenger had an e-bike, resulting in the individual being denied boarding, in line with current policies and procedures established by the fast ferry operators in the interest of safety.”

He added that following the receipt of the complaint, “a meeting was scheduled for December the 15th at 9am. Due to another unforeseen genuine urgent matter, the meeting had to be postponed.”

According to Borg, on the day of the meeting, “to minimise any inconvenience the parties involved in the meeting were notified of such postponement at 7:12am.”

CEO Jonathan Borg concluded by reiterating the commitment to “avoid political manoeuvres and expressed a willingness to engage with anyone interested in discussing further.”

On Saturday, local organisations had slammed Transport Malta and the Malta Maritime Authority, saying that, “yet again they have postponed an important meeting with civil society organisation representatives from Moviment Graffitti, Rota and Friends of the Earth Malta, intended to address unfair policies hampering e-bike and scooter commuters of the Gozo Fast Ferry.”

They also said that the latest meeting set for last Friday at 9am was cancelled that same morning, “meaning members of the organisations, some from Gozo, were already on their way or had already arrived at the Transport Malta Offices in Lija.”

The organisations stated that “Friday’s date was set after a prior meeting earlier this month was also cancelled at short notice.”
