The 3rd annual yacht races for the G2-Sagra Famiglia Cup, organised by the Imperial Gozo Yacht Club were won by the yacht Chardonnay, with Daniel Talma at the helm. The second of two races was held on Sunday, the 27th of September 2009, with a start line west to Mgarr harbour, and a course which had the yachts leaving Comino to starboard and then cross the finish line east of Mgarr harbour.

After a close start, the currents in the north Comino channel at times were enough to significantly affect the yachts which were making slow headway, and this required the yachts to make several tacks along the Comino coast. Throughout the race, the ENE wind was light, but at least the wind was better than the practically calm conditions experienced during the first race on 13th September 2009. Calm reined again towards the end of last Sunday’s race, but by that time, the first three yachts had already crossed the finish line.

Behind the winner in order of the combined rankings of both races, were the yachts Prime Time, First Class, Illusion and Third Time Lucky. Both races were officiated by Mr. Peter Hedges.

The G2-Sagra Famiglia Cup was originally setup by Angelo Bajada in memory of his father Vitor Bajada and is named after the traditional Gozo cargo boat which the latter co-owned and commissioned in 1933.

The yacht club organised six yacht races in 2009, which were open to all yachts, regardless of club membership. A similar racing schedules is planned for next year and more information can be obtained from www.igyc.info.
