Din L-Art Helwa – Ghawdex said that it has now been in operation for some two and a half years. During that time the Gozo branch of the Maltese National Trust organisation Din L-Art Helwa, said that it has been “actively helping to raise the national conscience about the perils of following a develop at all costs policy similar to that of Malta.”
“That, as well as the risks to the ‘Gozo dream’ that has made our small island such a unique and attractive destination to live in and to holiday in for decades,” DLHGh added.
The DLHGh committee explained that “we have been particularly focused on the protection of our village cores and our heritage buildings doing all possible to protect the vernacular features of Gozo while taking a pragmatic approach in understanding that Gozo’s economy needs to grow at a similar pace to that of Malta but moving in the right direction rather than the wrong direction.”
To this end Din L-Art Helwa Ghawdex said it was instrumental in the setting up of The Coalition for Gozo, where the three Gozitan based ENGOs including Wirt Ghawdex and Ghawdix often speak with one voice on issues of national importance.
Just over a year Din L-Art Helwa Ghawdex was also instrumental in setting up Ghal Ghawdex together with other key entities in Gozo including the Gozo Region grouping all the Gozo local councils, the Gozo Business Chamber, the Gozo Tourism Association and the Gozo University Group.
DLHGh said this group was successful in “again raising the national conscience, developing an eight point plan which was presented to Government.”
“Our work at Din L-Art Helwa Ghawdex continues. We have had some successes in our mission but the work of environmental NGOs is still cut out with the onslaught on Gozo continuing on many fronts including the key issue at the moment of development in the vicinity of the UNESCO Ggantija temples and other sites of national importance,” it said.
The Din L-Art Helwa Ghawdex committee stated that it now has 8 strong hard working members and “we would welcome new members to the committee who are willing to dedicate some time to working for the environment of Gozo.”
People with an architectural and/or town planning background, environmental background or any other discipline are welcome.
DLHGh said that its present committee is a varied one composed of bankers, photographers and publishers, teachers, engineers, architects, real estate professionals etc and “we welcome anyone from any background who has Gozo at heart.”
The DLHGh committee invited interested persons to contact please contact them at Din L-Art Helwa Ghawdex on ghawdex@dinlarthelwa.org if they would like to be considered to join their dedicated group of people.
