The Environmental Health Directorate has warned that the above brand of oregano must not be consumed due to elevated levels of Pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are a large group of natural toxins synthesised as secondary metabolites by different plant species.

The Directorate said that several PAs are known to be highly toxic to humans and animals as a result of their presence in the food chain. (Source: EFSA Journal Vol 15, Issue 7 – Jul 2017)

The Directorate warned that the product must not be consumed in view of potential contamination with Norovirus.

The Directorate said that Norovirus cause gastrointestinal illness to humans. Norovirus infection can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain. Less common symptoms are low fever, chills, and headache. Vomiting can be sudden and frequent resulting in remarkable fluid loss.
