The Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna, is calling for a building moratorium on the extension of 2006 development zones to protect areas of ecological, archaeological and agricultural importance.

Zminijietna said that it also “fully supports the initiative taken by Xemxija residents, the Local Council and several environmental, social and political organisations to campaign against the development proposal on a stretch of land in Xemxija. A large part of it is classified of ecological importance.”

It argued that “the development is within an area of archaeological importance, such as the cart ruts, currently surrounded by natural garigue. The Roman Baths in the area lie just under where this proposed development is, and the extensive works proposed, including excavating to make an underground car park will put this valuable site at major risk,” the leftist organisation stated.”

Zminijietna urged the Government “to protect the land for the common benefit of residents and ensure public access, preserving the cultural and natural heritage for generations to come, and preserving the open space there already is.”

It also highlighted that fact that “in the vicinity a massive development is already taking place at the ex-Mistra Village site, where 4 huge towers are proposed with over 700 apartments. The development is within an area of archaeological importance, such as the cart ruts, currently surrounded by natural garigue.”
